If you had a child, "you can take to grow? Is there a DA of adult onset? By Jon Herring "Hey, Phillip ... you mind if I sit here to eat you?" I asked.
"Surely not, so ..."
"How is school? Is that ok? "
" Actually, no. I wish it was summer. "
" Yes, I remember what it was like, "I said.
Phillip eleven. He is the son of some friends of my family and we were in a little party when I saw him sitting alone. She had not seen him, and wanted to remind you of who I am and know a little more.
gradually calmed down and felt more confident. He told me his plans for the summer. He told me his friends sobe and the girl he likes at school. And tamvién told me that the school did not like much.
"It's hard," he said. "Also, I have ADHD so do not pay attention very well. "
"" Really? How do you know you have ADHD? "I asked.
"That's what the doctor says." He told me that I've had since birth. That is why I have to take medicine. "
"Well, I think you're right. How do you feel that medicine? "
" Before I was a little nervous, "he said. "And I could not sleep when the taking. Now, I just want to eat off. "
After congratulating Phillip by his manners and intelligence. I changed the subject again at its plans for summer. But what he said worried me. I saw an intelligent young man who was bored and frustrated at school ... I probably have behavioral problems ... and now being marked as "sick" and subject to taking drugs.
And, unfortunately, Phillip is just one of millions ... His story bothered me because I could imagine what that would do to the psyche and the development of a child, be sentenced to life in this way by a doctor. One is damaged, defective. The brain is not working properly. One is not acceptable in its normal state, but to take these drugs every day can help. Can you imagine if we were to "vote" to determine if the cancer is a disease ... ... or diabetes or heart disease? That would be patently absurd. But every year, there are votes to add more and more trouble to this manual.
In the case of ADHD, psychiatrists made a list of behaviors most common in children, the parents and teachers are opposed to - and then called disease. In a period of one year, "diagnosed" more than half a million children. Since then, the number of behaviors that constitute the disorder has continued to grow. Now there are 18 of those. That opens the door for even more children will be marked and then subjected to drugs. Today, almost all examinations of ADHD consists of parents, teachers and school administrators and social workers scoring these behaviors as you notice them at home and in the classroom. A doctor reviews the list and if a child exhibits six or more such behaviors the child is "diagnosed" with ADHD. In almost all cases, treatment is a pharmacist. Currently, the "epidemic" of ADHD has grown eats seven million young people in the U.S.. Most of these children are taking medicines. And if one adds those who are taking antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs, the number is more than 10 million. That's more than the total population of the city of New York!
One wonders, where were all these kids when I was growing up?
Dr. Russell Barkley, professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts, has the answer to that. Were there, he says. "They were the clowns class. [...] At that time, we had a professional sign for them.
"They were lazy kids, bad kids, who left the school, the criminals, who did not want useless to do anything in life. Now we know - we know that disability is a real, valid condition ina ... "
Were still not studying, eh? Do not fit? Do children who were the traditional teaching hostile, boring and unacceptable? I wonder if Barkley was referring to the "abandoned" as
• Bill Gates and Paul Allen (withdrew from the university, co-founder of Microsoft);
• Sir Richard Branson (desist from high school, founder of Virgin Group);
• Michael Dell, Larry Ellison and Steve Jobs (withdrew from the university, the founders of large computer companies);
• Kirk Kerkorian (withdrew from Grade 8, billionaire)
• William Faulkner (got out of high school and college, novelist, Nobel Prize winner);
• Ray Kroc (withdrew from high school, founder of McDonald's);
• Dave Thomas (withdrew from high school, founder Wendy's).
almost certainly, if many of these men were in school today, the "rotularían" with a mental disorder.
pharmaceutical companies and modern psychiatry presentanal ADHD as a biological abnormality in the brain. Along with many other "mental illness" is often said to be caused by that phrase that covers everything - "a chemical imbalance."
The problem is that psychiatry has never validated ADHD as a biological entity. They have never shown even the slightest evidence of a "chemical imbalance" or that this is a real brain disease. However, millions of children and parents are told that this is the case. Dr. Fred Baughman is a respected pediatric neurologist who has been practicing 35. He knows what a real illness, so that from 1993 to 1997, he stubbornly maintained correspondence with the FDA, DEA, Ciba-Geigy (the original manufacturers of Ritalin) and the most recognized researchers of ADHD at the National Institutes of Health Mental. Asked them to show you any peer-reviewed scientific literature, to prove some physical or chemical aberration ADHD qualify as a disease or medical syndrome. After years of persistence, Dr. Baughman eventually managed to make these groups recognize that there is no objective validation for ADHD. Today, the National Institute of Health states, "We have no evidence valid independent of ADHD, and there are no data to indicate that ADHD is due to brain dysfunction. "
But hundreds of thousands of doctors still "labeled" children as patients and prescribe drugs for a strong and dangerous thing to recognize that they can not prove. That's not medicine. It is fraud.
And many doctors and social workers pushing these drugs powerful and manipulative. I heard from a doctor who asked a mother, "If your child had diabetes, insulin would you no?"
Unfortunately, this mother probably did not know enough to tell the doctor that diabetes can be measured - whether by abnormality the blood sugar level or malfunction of the pancreas - but not ADHD.
When you go to the doctor, having blood drawn, make films. Do not ask how it behaves. But this is how the "disease" of ADHD (like depression and many other "mental illness") is diagnosed.
Thomas Szasz, professor emeritus of psychiatry at the State University of New York, says, "any performance or misconduct may be a disease. That is not what are the diseases. "
diseases are disorders of the human body. For example, typhoid fever is a disease. Does spring fever? Not so much. Spring fever is a metaphor. It is a figure of speech ... just like most mental illnesses. Yet treatment for this figure of speech is now worth billions of dollars a year.
Although there are now many drugs used to treat ADHD, Ritalin (methylphenidate) is one of the most common. In 1970, there were an estimated 150,000 children taking Ritalin in the U.S.. Today, that number is estimated to be over five million. According to the DEA, the production of methylphenidate increased by 700% between 1990 and 1997!
And the trend is to "diagnose" children at younger and younger ages. According to a study published in the journal of the AMA (American Medical Association), recipes for children two to four years increased by almost 300% between 1991 and 1995. I have searched most recent statistics, but it is certain that the trend has continued.
And despite what developers say NO ... these drugs are safe and harmless.
Ritalin, for example, is classified by the FDA and the DEA as a controlled substance in Schedule II [Schedule II]. Is included in the same category as methamphetamine, cocaine, morphine and Dilaudid (including hard drugs illegal and prescription drugs). These drugs are powerful. Can cause damage. And have great risk of being abused.
Most drugs ADHD are a class of amphetamine. On the street, these stimulants are commonly known as "speed" ["speed".] And despite the "speed" can increase alertness and productivity, the trajectory is a shock ending explosion.
But what are the risks of long-term use of these drugs, especially for children who are developing?
It is known that these drugs cause depression and psychotic states. And they can be the true cause of neurological disorders such as epilepsy and seizures. Can also lead to physical dependence and have been shown to precipitate the abuse of illegal drugs. Studies also
have shown that drugs for ADHD affects the physical growth of children and make the brain atrophy and shrink.
But of course, the biggest risk is death. In fact, research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health showed that children and teenagers taking drugs like Ritalin are at risk of sudden death than 500% higher than typical for children of age and health status comparable.
Naturally, the long-term use may increase the risk of heart attack.
And cancer is a proven risk. In one study, researchers identified twelve children who met the criteria for ADHD in DSM-IV and should start taking methylphenidate in daily doses between 20 and 54 mg. As the test group was small, used to each child as their own control.
chromosomal abnormalities in blood were measured before starting treatment. Then these same tests were conducted after three months of taking the medicine. Three different chromosome abnormalities were evaluated. In all children, significant increases in aberrations increased by 323% after treatment. Researchers believe that the highest frequencies of these aberrations are equivalent to an increased risk of cancer.
And to offset these significant risks ... there is absolutely NO long study term, showing positive effects of these drugs on learning, academic standards, or social behavior.
Certainly there are children who misbehave at school and at home. Some children may never learn to control. There are others who are exceptionally hyperactive.
But in most cases, these children do not need medication. Certainly need not be exposed to the dangers of these drugs. But his doctors ever ask what kind of food, preservatives and additives are exposed these children? Nutrition investigate or give advice on the many ways the food they eat, the toxins they are exposed or nutrition they lack can affect mood and behavior? Of course, most doctors do not. That would require too much effort and monitoring. It is much easier (and more profitable) to write a prescription and pass a new patient.
Today, constantly tells us that we protect our children from drug abuse. And yet there are some disturbing exceptions to that rule. Thomas Szasz put it well when he said, "to label a child as mentally ill is stigmatization, not diagnosis. Giving a child a psychiatric drug is poison, no treat. "
Your health, Jon Herring
